Itanagar is an alluring leisure destination nestled in the foothills of Himalayan range in far North-East of India. Situated 350 metres above sea level, Itanagar the capital of Arunachal Pradesh is a beautiful hilly town covered with lush green forests and majestic Himalayan mountain ranges. Itanagar is popularly known as 'The Land of Dawn-lit Mountains' because of its closeness to the plains of Assam. The weather is very pleasant and moderate here.

The ruin of 500 years old Ita Fort is an important landmark of Itanagar. The name of the city has derived its name from this fort. The fort has an irregular shape, built mainly with bricks dating back to the 14th-15th Century is identified as the Mayapur of Ramachandra, a king of the Jitari Dynasty.

The colourful Thupten Gatsal Ling Gompa (monastery) situated on a small hill in the Itanagar city is a must visit to enjoy the simple yet aesthetic Tibetan architecture and the scenic surrounding with a variety of colourful flowers.

Ganga Lake (Gyakar Sinyi) is another place worth visit. It is a located in a picturesque location 6km away from the main town, surrounded by fresh vegetation, orchids and rock mass, 6 km away from Itanagar,

Best Time to visit Itanagar

Summer

The temperature ranges from 32°C to 18°C during summer. May to June is considered to be the summer season. In summers Himalayan bridge makes the atmosphere cool and pleasant.

Monsoon

Monsoon in Itanagar starts from July and lasts till September. Due to heavy and frequent rainfall, the weather remains damp during monsoon. It is advisable to avoid visiting Itanagar in the rainy season because of bad road condition.

Winter

Winter starts from October and lasts till April. Temperature ranges from 22°C to 8°C during these days. You have to wear heavy woollen in winter to save yourself from cold.

How to reach Itanagar

Itanagar is an important destination in Arunachal Pradesh. Being the capital hub of Arunachal it is well connected with all the major cities of Assam and Northeast India. Read to know to the best and convenient way to reach Itanagar.

By Air

Lilabari airport located in North Lakhimpur district of Assam is the nearest airport(57 km). Guwahati is the nearest International airport located at a distance of 324km from Itanagar. You can hire a private taxi or shard taxi to reach Itanagar from Lakhimpur. Daily bus service is also available to Itanagar from Lakhimpur

Helicopter Service

Helicopter service is available to Naharlagun form Guwahati and Dibrugarh airport.

By Railways

Naharlagun railway station is the nearest railway station situated at a distance of 10km from Itanagar. Harmuti is another bearest railhead at a distce of 32km.

Naharlagun - Guwahati Inter City Express is the best option to reach Naharlagun from Guwahati. Trains from Harmuti railway station(North Lakhimpur) connect to Guwahati which is well connected to most major cities of the country.

By Road

Bus services are available from various places of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh to Itanagar. Daily overnight buses ply to Itanagar from Guwahati, Tezpur, Dibrugarh etc.

Buses and shared Sumos are available from Tezpur, Banderdewa, Guwahati, North-Lakhimpur, Bombdila, Ziro, Pasighat, Balijan etc to Itanagar.
